About us

John and Kendra Abbott

John and Kendra are professional nature photographers, educators, and outdoor enthusiasts based in Bessemer, AL. Both are at The University of Alabama, where John is Chief Curator and Director of Research and Collections for the UA Museums, and Kendra is a Researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences.

John has focused on dragonflies and damselflies throughout much of his career and has written three books on these beautiful subjects that contain much of our photography. Kendra is an ecologist and focused on endangered species and conservation issues for much of her career. She is also getting a degree in the science of science communication and is interested in how nature documentaries can be used effectively to convey critical science needed for everyday decisions.

Together, they have authored Insects of Texas and, most recently, Insects of North America, published by Princeton University Press. They have had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Latin America, Africa, and other parts of the world, where they enjoy taking photos of pretty much anything in the natural world. They feel lucky to be able to teach and excite others about the amazing biodiversity they have been able to observe through their travels and photography together.

John and Kendra regularly teach photography workshops all over the world and have worked with major production companies like Disney, National Geographic, and Netflix on nature documentaries such as A Real Bugs Life, Life on our Planet , and Nightmares of Nature. They also have a long history of doing nature outreach events and other programs for adults and children.
